AI Detector for Teachers

Did my student write this, or AI? Paste the text into the box and get a clear answer.

Free with an account.

How do I check a student's text?

  1. 1
Copy the full text from the submission, as the student handed it in, with every paragraph.
  2. 2
    Paste it into the box.
  3. 3
Run the check and read the verdict first.

What does the result show?

The result is one verdict for the whole text. It is one of four lines:

  • "Most likely human-written."The text has the pattern of a person's writing.
  • "Human text, edited with AI."A person wrote the text and AI changed parts of it.
  • "Most likely AI-generated."The text has the pattern of AI writing.
  • "Hard to tell."

Three of the four verdicts come with an AI score from 0 to 100% on a Human, Mixed and AI scale.

Parts of the text are marked "Likely AI" or "Likely human". The marks show which parts look like AI and where they sit in the paper, for example one section in the middle or the whole conclusion. A mark on one section and a mark on the whole paper lead to different questions, so use the marks to choose what to ask the student about first.

With "Most likely human-written.", the question is answered and the paper needs nothing more from this check. The steps below are for the other verdicts.

What should I do with a result?

Use the result to talk with the student about the paper. Take these steps:

  1. 1
Talk about the work.If parts are marked "Likely AI", point to them. Ask the student to explain the main idea in their own words, to say where each source came from and to describe how they planned the paper.
  2. 2
Ask for the drafts. In a Google Doc, open File → Version history → See version history, and the earlier versions are listed there with their dates. Word files kept in OneDrive have a version history too. Notes and outlines also show how the paper grew.
  3. 3
Compare with writing from class.Take a short text the student wrote in class, such as a response or a quiz answer. Compare sentence length, vocabulary and the usual mistakes with the submitted paper.

With "Human text, edited with AI.", ask which tool the student used and for which parts of the paper. Compare the answer with the marked parts. With "Hard to tell.", steps 2 and 3 are the most useful.

A short message to send: "Please send me the link to the Google Doc for this paper, so I can look at its version history. I would also like to talk through the main idea with you."

Second-language and formal writing

Many AI detectors have two problems. The same text gets a different score each time, and text that a person wrote gets flagged as AI.

The second problem hits formal writing and writing by people who use English as a second language. That includes lab reports, business writing and papers by students who learned English at school. How often a detector does this depends on how it was trained. A detector learns from examples of human and AI writing, and weak examples teach it weak habits.

We built Owlmark to fix both problems. The same text gets the same result, so a paper gives the same answer when a colleague checks it again, and human writing is almost never flagged as AI.

We keep retraining our model. If you think we got a text wrong, write to support@owlmark.app and we will review it.

Checking many submissions

Check each paper on its own, so each student gets a separate answer. The limits decide how many papers fit into a month.

  • A free account includes 10,000 words a month, up to 1,000 words per check. For example, twelve papers of 800 words use 9,600 words.
  • A 3,000-word paper is above the free limit per check and needs a paid plan.
  • Paid plans allow up to 5,000 words per check, and Premium includes 300,000 words a month, which is 100 papers of 3,000 words. See the [pricing page](/pricing/) for plans.

For a department or a whole school, send the Enterprise form. We offer these:

  • API access
  • invoice billing
  • volume plans by words per month
  • custom models
  • an answer to any individual request

We reply by email.
